Pierre Bahurel is the director-general of Mercator Ocean International, the operational centre for global ocean monitoring and forecasting. Graduated from Ecole Polytechnique (France), he has worked on space altimetry, modelling and data assimilation applied to operational oceanography and was among the founders of Mercator Ocean in 1995, which he has been leading and developing since then. Pierre also holds an Executive MBA degree of HEC School of Management.
Pierre manages today one of the world’s leading centres delivering operational ocean information worldwide. Under his leadership, Mercator Ocean International was entrusted by the European Union in 2014 for implementing the marine component of the EU’s Copernicus programme: the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service. This European service is recognized today by thousands of users worldwide as a unique source of timely, reliable and state-of-the-art information on the physical and biogeochemical state of the world ocean. Pierre has been incessantly fostering a virtuous growth of operational oceanography for a sustainable ocean, bringing science and technology solutions to society and economy challenges.
