Research professor Jouni Pulliainen has been active in Earth Observation (EO) science, technology, education, research infrastructures and innovations since 1988. Dr. Pulliainen has internationally recognised scientific leadership in boreal cryosphere EO application area. Most importantly, he is a pioneer in modelling, inversion algorithm development and data assimilation in snow remote sensing, as well as successfully developing both regional and global operational snow monitoring applications. During his position in directing the Arctic Research of Finnish Meteorological Institute, J. Pulliainen executed his vision and expanded the Sodankylä Observatory into a satellite ground segment, which is one of the focus areas in the Finnish Space Strategy. Pulliainen currently leads the Space and Earth Observation Centre (FMI-SPACE) of the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
