The Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DEFIS) for Defence Industry and Space (DEFIS) leads the European Commission's activities in the Defence Industry and Space sector. DG DEFIS is in charge of implementing the EU Space Programme, consisting of the European Earth Observation Programme (Copernicus), the European Global Navigation Satellite System (Galileo) and the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS), the EU Governmental Satellite Communications (GOVSATCOM) programme, IRIS2 (Europe's new Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnection & Security by Satellites) and Space Situational Awareness (SSA).
The European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) provides safe and secure European satellite navigation services, advances the commercialization of Galileo, EGNOS, and Copernicus data and services, engages in secure satellite communications (GOVSATCOM & IRIS2), and operates the EU SST Front Desk. EUSPA is also responsible for accrediting the security of all EU Space Programme components.
The Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union spearheads the agenda and priorities of the EU in the second half of 2023. Spanish presidency will focus on the role of the EU in space policy and its technology towards a green and sustainable future.
